Legendary philanthropists who are heavily involved in China, healthcare, and sustainability

Susan Rockefeller is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, artist and conservationist.  She is founder of Musings (www.musingsmag.com), a digital magazine that showcases responsible innovation and provides inspiration and action for a better world.  Susan sits on the boards of Oceana, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, We are Family Foundation, Asian Cultural Council and is a Mission Board Member of Imagine.  Susan is also Principal of Louverture films where she has exec- and co-produced over 20 acclaimed films, including Victor Kossakovsky's Gunda and Aquarela; Nadine Labaki's Capernaum; RaMell Ross' Hale County This Morning, This Evening; and Yance Ford's Strong Island; Sue's own original films - including "Bach Star Cafe", "Food for Thought, Food for Life", "Strike a Chord", "Making the Crooked Straight", and "Mission of Mermaids" - have aired on HBO, PBS and Discovery.  Susan is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations

David Rockefeller, Jr. is an active participant in the business and nonprofit arena, especially in the areas of environment, the arts and philanthropy. Mr. Rockefeller is a Trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and previously served as Chairman of the Rockefeller Foundation.  He was twice Chairman of Rockefeller & Company, which became Rockefeller Capital Management in 2018 and where he now serves as a Director.

As a passionate supporter of the arts, Mr. Rockefeller is a trustee of the Asian Cultural Council and a life trustee of the Museum of Modern Art.  He is also a fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the former chair of the North American Nominating Committee for the Praemium Imperiale, the Japanese prize for outstanding international achievement in the arts.

Mr. Rockefeller’s commitment to environmental preservation and his passion for sailing led him to found the nonprofit organization, Sailors for the Sea (SfS), in 2004. In 2018 SfS joined forces with the global ocean conservation organization, Oceana, becoming one of its programs. Mr. Rockefeller has joined Oceana as a Director where he and his wife Susan promote the organization’s campaign-driven work to sailors worldwide.  Mr. Rockefeller’s dedication to protecting planetary health goes deeper than the oceans. In 2013, Mr. Rockefeller and two of his sisters established the Peggy McGrath Rockefeller Foundation, operating under the name “Stone House Grain.” Stone House Grain holds and manages 2,000 acres of farmland in Columbia County, New York, and is dedicated to promoting regenerative agriculture as well as to supporting young farmers.

Mr. Rockefeller is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He lives in New York City with his wife Susan, an artist and filmmaker, and together they are the parents of four children.

Dr. Richard Park is the CEO of Rendr Physicians, a primary care driven, multi-specialty physician group serving an underserved patient population of approximately 100,000 in New York City. Dr. Park is also the founder and former CEO of CityMD, a leading urgent care company that has treated over 4 million patients through its 120+ locations in New York and New Jersey. Under Richard's leadership, CityMD grew successfully from a single-site startup medical office in 2010 to almost $500mm of revenues in 2019 through de novo site openings and medical practice acquisitions. In addition, he is a board certified emergency medicine physician with deep healthcare operating experience and is a successful serial entrepreneur and investor who has worked with companies from conceptualization through execution and multiple exits. Prior to founding CityMD in 2010, Richard was an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. As a physician educator he served as Associate Program Director and was voted Teaching Attending of the Year by the residents from 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He is a co-editor of McGraw Hill’s Intensive Review of Emergency Medicine.  Richard received a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Sharon is a passionate and respected global health leader with extensive experience in business and product development across pharmaceuticals, medical devices, vaccines and technology platforms. As Head of JLABS @ Shanghai, Sharon is responsible for setting the strategic direction and overseeing all operational activities for JLABS @ Shanghai, the first Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS in Asia Pacific and the largest in its global network. Her responsibilities include managing the portfolio of JLABS in the region and collaborating with its internal and external business partners across multiple sectors to implement educational programming and drive high-quality company sourcing from innovation hotspots across Asia Pacific. In 2020, Sharon was recognized by Forbes China as one of the 50 Top Women in Tech. Prior to joining Johnson & Johnson, Sharon was Head of Asia at Aeras, where she established its Beijing office for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and focused on tuberculosis (TB) vaccines. She had previously served as a member of the Senior Leadership team for Baxter in Shanghai with responsibility for providing strategic direction and making deals to add to Baxter’s top line growth. She began her career working in Business Development for Sosei Heptares, a Japanese start-up turned international biopharma focused on CNS, immuno-oncology, gastroenterology, inflammation and other rare/specialty indications, based in London.

Damien Ma is Director of the Think Tank at the Paulson Institute, where he co-founded MacroPolo. He is the author or editor of the books, In Line Behind a Billion People: How Scarcity Will Define China’s Ascent in the Next Decade. He is the editor of The Economics of Air Pollution in China (by Ma Jun). He currently also serves as adjunct faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Previously, Ma was a Senior Analyst at Eurasia Group, the political risk research and advisory firm. At EG, he mainly focused on the China and East Asia markets, covering areas that spanned energy and commodities and industrial policy to elite politics and US-China relations. He also led work on analyzing Mongolian politics and its mining sector. His advisory and analytical work served a range of clients from institutional investors and multinationals to the US, Japanese, and Singaporean governments.

Jane Jie Sun is the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board of directors of Trip.com Group Limited, the largest travel company in China and Asia, and the second largest in the world. She first joined the company as the Chief Financial Officer in 2005, later serving as the Chief Operating Officer and the Co-President, before moving into the CEO role in 2016.
In the years since Ms. Sun joined, Trip.com Group has experienced a significant increase in its market capitalization, growing from about $1 billion to $20 billion, and has continued to rapidly expand its global footprint. Founded in 1999 with the mission of bringing the best travel experience to travelers, the company effectively adapted to the rise of mobile Internet, growing from a small tech company into a one-stop-shop for travel services for 400 million users worldwide. The company also has a firm belief in the ability for tourism to promote understanding and exchange, and to advance peaceful development. Ms. Sun led Trip.com Group’s expansion of its global presence by investing in the British travel search company, Skyscanner, and India’s largest online travel company, MakeMyTrip. The company also launched its own international brand Trip.com to serve customers from all over the world. As the only female CEO in China’s high-tech industry, Ms. Sun proactively advocates gender equality, and has made it her mission to empower women to achieve balance and success in both their career and family lives. For example, Trip.com Group is the first company in China to offer oocyte cryopreservation as an employee benefit. Other female friendly policies include birth gifts and commuter benefits for pregnant workers. At Trip.com Group, female employees represent over half of the total workforce and a third of senior management.

Winston Ma is an investor, attorney, author, and adjunct professor in the global digital economy. He is one of a small number of native Chinese who have worked as investment professionals and practicing capital markets attorneys in both the United States and China. Most recently, he was Managing Director and Head of North America Office for China Investment Corporation (CIC), China’s sovereign wealth fund, for 10 years. Prior to that, Mr. Ma served as the deputy head of equity capital markets at Barclays Capital, a vice president at J.P. Morgan investment banking, and a corporate lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP. A nationally certified Software Programmer as early as 1994,  Mr. Ma is the book author of China’s Mobile Economy (Wiley 2016, among “best 2016 business books for CIOs”), Digital Economy 2.0 (2017 Chinese), The Digital Silk Road (2018 German), China’s AI Big Bang (2019 Japanese), and Investing in China (Risk Books, 2006). His new books in 2020 are “The Hunt for Unicorns: How Sovereign Funds Are Reshaping Investment in the Digital Economy” (Wiley October 2020) and “The Digital WarHow China’s Tech Power Shapes the Future of AI, Blockchain, and Cyberspace” (Wiley December 2020).

Roberta Lipson is CEO of Chindex International and Chairman of the Board of United Family Hospitals. She has 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry in China. Since she co-founded Chindex in 1981, the company has expanded from its business of capital medical equipment distribution to healthcare delivery. She is the creative force behind the United Family Healthcare brand, and its hospitals and clinics in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Wuxi. United Family is the first foreign invested and managed private healthcare group in China. An active leader in the business community in Beijing, Ms. Lipson has served as a director of the U.S. China Business Council, as well as 4 successive terms on the board of the Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce – China (AmCham) and is Co-Chair of the Amcham Healthcare Forum. She also chairs the Boards of the United Foundation for Chinese Orphans and is a co- founder of Kehilat Beijing. Ms. Lipson holds a BA from Brandeis University and an MBA from Columbia University.

John Verdieck is the Director of International Climate Policy at The Nature Conservancy. In this role he works to improve policy coherence between international climate change rulesets and national-level action in the land sector.  John formerly worked at the U.S. State Department where he negotiated workstreams related to forests, carbon markets, and the Paris Agreement’s rulesets for Nationally Determined Contributions and greenhouse gas accounting.  John also manages TNC’s work related to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Carbon Offset Protocol, and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, a $1 billion fund for reducing deforestation.

Yanzhong Huang is a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he directs the Global Health Governance roundtable series. He is also a professor and director of global health studies at Seton Hall University's School of Diplomacy and International Relations, where he developed the first academic concentration among U.S. professional international affairs schools that explicitly addresses the security and foreign policy aspects of health issues. He is the founding editor of Global Health Governance: The Scholarly Journal for the New Health Security Paradigm.

Her career began at Goldman Sachs, then Citi where she was a Pacific Basin analyst, then became an Asian Portfolio Manager for both Institutional and Private Wealth Group. Ms. Cheng received her MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of Business. She is a Trustee of the following Boards: Vice-Chair of China/US at TNC (The Nature Conservancy); Facing History and Ourselves(past Chair of China Project); Vice-Chair at China Institute; and past Trustee and current member of Committee 100. Josephine is the Executive Director of the Serica Initiative, the non profit organization operated by SupChina. Josephine has experience working in U.S.-China global health philanthropy, and previously practiced law at Davis Polk & Wardwell and Goldman Sachs. She has also worked as a financial journalist at the Bloomberg News Beijing Bureau, reporting on China’s institutional investors and outbound investments. Born in London and raised in Asia, Josephine earned her J.D. degree from Yale Law School, and her M.A. and B.A. degrees from Stanford University. She is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Jeremy Goldkorn is editor-in-chief of SupChina and co-host of the Sinica podcast. He moved to China in 1995 and became managing editor of Beijing's first independent English-language entertainment magazine. In 2003, he founded the website and research firm, Danwei, which tracked Chinese media, markets, politics, and business. It was acquired in 2013 by the Financial Times. He has lived in a worker's dormitory, produced a documentary film about African soccer players in Beijing, and rode a bicycle from Peshawar to Kathmandu via Kashgar and Lhasa. He moved to Nashville Tennessee in 2015 and is a board member of the Tennessee China Network.
